INDEPENDENCE [Spring 2006]

The Spring 2006 issue includes articles on all of the issues concerning residents of Rickmansworth in the past six months. Chairman, Bob Templeman outlines the ongoing concerns and problems with sites such as LUL’s new building on Parsonage Road; the saga of the former Capital Skips site on Riverside Drive and the storage at Maple Cross of the toxic foam and water used to put out the fires at the Buncefield Depot. He also reports on the importance of new tree planting, the confusion regarding Regional Assemblies and the Year of the Volunteer awards.
Summaries of the major articles are given below:
Planning: New committee member Irene East tells of successfully fighting off development in Nightingale Road. Local resident Carey Bromell makes some very useful suggestions for fighting off unsuitable development and Planning Portfolio member Jane Weitzmann reports on her activities for the past 6 months. She reminds members that they are free to call her on this subject on 01923 779966 or email: jane@weitzmann.co.uk. See planning articles on this site.
The CVS – Centre for Voluntary Service outlines its work in Three Rivers.
Ex-chairman Jasper Jepson writes about the latest news from the NHS locally.
Peter’s Paddock: A long running feature of the magazine is a round up of local news and activity by long standing Rickmansworth activist Peter Waters. This edition is mostly taken up with obituaries for Donald MacDonald – a former treasurer of the Association and Mrs. Kay Mendelssohn M.B.E – commonly known as Mrs. Rickmansworth.
Secretary’s Notes: Our secretary, Cliff Le Quelenec gives a round up of the Association’s activities since the last edition in the Autumn. Another fascinating insight into the amount of work undertaken by this Association.
Committee member Dorothy Burton reports on the recent problems in Harefield Road, and Secretary Cliff Le Quelenec asks some probing questions on the residents parking scheme, hoping to provoke debate on this issue.
Local Organisations: We are again lucky to have articles in the magazine from various local voluntary organisations telling us about their work. This issue contains pieces from the WEA and Rickmansworth and Chorleywood District Scouts.
Finally the issue contains the Agenda for the Association’s 76th Annual General Meeting to be held at St. Mary’s Church Centre at 8 p.m. on Friday 16th June to which all are welcome.
